How to keep downlight cables accessible when plastering
Keep a spotlight or downlight position easy to find while the ceiling is skimmed, then reopen only the cutout required by the chosen fitting.

A practical installation overview

Confirm the light and cutout size
Use the downlight manufacturer's specified cutout rather than the bezel diameter. The required opening determines whether the spotlight bead is suitable and how the centre should be reopened later.

Retrieve and secure the cable position
Before the ceiling is closed and skimmed, make sure the cable or correctly terminated connection is in the intended position and can be recovered safely after plastering.

Mark the position with the bead
Centre the spotlight or downlight bead over the prepared opening and staple the flange flat. The protected centre keeps the location visible instead of leaving an open hole to plaster around.

Skim across the protected opening
The plasterer can finish across the closed centre and work to the circular regulating edge. This helps stop wet plaster falling into the opening and reduces the chance of the position being lost.

Wait until the ceiling has cured
Leave the bead centre in place while the finish sets. Once cured, tap the centre to reveal the cutting guide or centre point.
- 06
Reopen only the diameter required
Cut the opening to the size specified by the selected downlight, protect the cable while cutting and complete the electrical installation to the manufacturer's instructions.
